The Graduate Certificate in Teaching Writing is a 20-credit program designed for certified middle and high school educators, adjunct university writing instructors, lecturers from various fields, and M.A. candidates seeking to strengthen their teaching credentials with writing expertise. To accommodate grade 6-12 teachers' schedules, classes are available on weekends, weekday evenings, and through summer intensive sessions (such as two-week courses).
This certification program involves five graduate-level courses: one foundational course plus four electives. Key areas of study encompass writing instruction theories and techniques, linguistic diversity awareness, digital tools for writing, sociocultural influences on writing growth, nonfiction composition, evaluation methods, and classroom-based research. Credits obtained may count toward an M.A. in English if admitted to the degree program.

Successful completion of a B.A. with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) or the equivalent from an accredited institution, or
Current enrollment as a Graduate student at IUPUI, or
Successful completion of an M.A. degree or higher at an accredited university, or
State certification in middle school or high school teaching.
A one page Personal Statement regarding your interest in the program is also required.
TOEFL iBT of 79-99 or IELTS of 6.5-7.0 will take the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) placement test. Admitted students with Duolingo scores (min. accepted score - 110) will also be required to take the EAP placement test.
