The NYU English Department enthusiastically invites qualified candidates to undertake graduate studies for an MA in English. As a sizable academic unit, we honor the historical breadth of the discipline while championing progressive scholarly methods. Our curriculum spans diverse specializations, with faculty and graduate researchers focusing on literary periods from medieval to contemporary works, including modernist, postcolonial, African American and Black Diasporic, Latinx, and Asian American literatures. MA candidates in our program refine their academic pursuits, enhance analytical and writing abilities, and complete a 35-45-page Master's Thesis with faculty guidance. This two-year program typically culminates with thesis completion during the second academic year.

Collaborating with PhD candidates, our MA students establish and manage funded scholarly groups, such as Critical Theory and Medievalisms, War and Post-War Cultural Studies, Creative Writing, Early Modern Literature, 18th/19th Century Literature Working Group, Marxist Studies, Modern/Contemporary Colloquium, Empowerment Politics, Postcolonial and Diaspora Studies Colloquium, and the Poetic Research Organization.
