The English Department at OU fosters a dynamic academic environment with a diverse group of scholars specializing in literature, cultural studies, rhetoric, writing, film, and media. Our program excels particularly in Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS) and Native American Literature (NAL). Graduates from our MA program frequently gain admission to leading PhD programs, while our RWS and NAL PhD recipients secure tenure-track positions at esteemed institutions. We provide full-time PhD and Master's programs in two primary concentrations: Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS) and Rhetoric and Writing Studies (RWS). Graduate students benefit from personalized mentorship by approximately thirty distinguished faculty members, whose teaching and research span numerous historical periods and specialized fields. Beyond our core strengths in RWS and NAL, the department also offers expertise in Theory, Medieval and Early Modern Literature, British and American Literature, Creative Writing, transnational literary studies, interdisciplinary approaches, and film and media studies.
