The English Department at Baylor University provides Master's and Doctoral degrees in English and American literature, with comprehensive instruction across all key historical eras while emphasizing literary analysis and aesthetic appreciation. The graduate program has a longstanding and continuing emphasis on the intersection of literature and religion. Our distinguished faculty are dedicated to equipping students for diverse post-graduate paths, including academic careers, further advanced study, or alternative professional opportunities. The department's faculty and graduate students explore the full spectrum of American literary works, spanning from colonial-era writings to contemporary digital-age literature, with particular attention to authors ranging from Anne Bradstreet to Anne Lamott. Current scholarly investigations by both faculty and students examine figures such as Cotton Mather, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mark Twain, Wendell Berry, and Sylvia Plath, along with critical approaches like Ecological Criticism and studies of American Catholic authors and war literature.
