The Master of Arts in Comparative Literature at UMass Amherst offers an intensive two-year curriculum that provides students with comprehensive training in literary and social theory. Students develop specialized expertise in one language and its literary traditions while gaining reading proficiency in three languages (including English). The program fosters a deep comprehension of a major historical literary period, along with training in research methodologies, literary translation, and critical analysis. MA candidates share classes with PhD students, creating a vibrant and collaborative academic environment. Participants join the Organization of Graduate Students in Comparative Literature (OGSCL) and help coordinate two prestigious national conferences: the Translation Studies Conference and the Crossroads Comparative Literature Conference.
