The Master of Music in Performance is a practice-focused program comprising 30 units of coursework in private instruction, ensembles, chamber music, music history, and theory. The Cal State Fullerton School of Music boasts faculty members with national and international acclaim as performers. Students benefit from a vibrant musical community that balances large-scale performance opportunities with personalized mentorship. This degree typically serves as a pathway to DMA programs for those pursuing doctoral studies. Guitarists receive specialized training through courses in guitar history and literature, supplemented by performance workshops and chamber ensembles that offer regular solo and group performance experiences. Both state-subsidized lessons and scholarship opportunities are available.
The program features two specializations: theory/composition and performance. Graduates of the M.M. program will: possess expert-level understanding of music history, literature, and theory; demonstrate pre-professional mastery in performance, composition, and analysis; enter their field with exceptional technical and artistic capabilities; communicate effectively through scholarly writing and presentations; exhibit leadership in collaborative academic and performance settings; explore innovative creative approaches in programming; and apply contemporary global perspectives to performance, composition, education, and career development.
