The Master of Music (MM) is a degree focused on performance. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. Typically, candidates have earned a Bachelor of Music degree or completed a comparable core curriculum within another bachelor's program.
Both the MM and MA degrees offer Composition and Music Education majors. The MM track for these fields emphasizes performance as a secondary component, requiring an audition for admission. The MA alternative prioritizes research as a secondary focus and doesn't mandate an audition or private lessons.
Graduate programs in composition and music education are available through either professional studies (MM) or research studies (MA). All MM programs, including these majors, maintain a strong performance component, necessitating an audition on a primary instrument or voice. While the MA doesn't require an audition for entry, it may incorporate secondary-level applied study.
The MM program generally requires one year of full-time residency, except for piano accompanying/chamber music (two years) and conducting (typically two academic years). Most students complete the program within two years of full-time study.
