The department provides an extensive curriculum focused on Central Eurasia, the expansive core region bridging Europe and Asia. Learners first gain broad exposure to the entire area before concentrating on a specific subregion. As part of the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies (HLS) within the College of Arts and Sciences, the Central Eurasian Studies Department (CEUS) equips Indiana University (IU) graduate students with essential skills for navigating and succeeding in our interconnected 21st-century world. HLS degree programs prioritize language mastery, cultural understanding, and rigorous training in both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Students benefit from exceptional faculty mentorship and abundant career advancement resources.
Applicants must have achieved a minimum of a 3.0 (B) grade point average (GPA) for the B.A. course work. The undergraduate record must show at least two years of any single foreign language at the college level or the equivalent.
Applicants whose native language is not English should submit proof of such proficiency by the time they apply for admission. Normally this is done by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Results of this test should be submitted as part of the application for admission.
