The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) French program is a 47-credit, two-year graduate course that offers advanced French studies while preparing candidates for French teaching certification in grades 5 through 12. This professional degree blends educational theory with traditional master's-level academics, fostering expertise in both French language studies and foreign language instruction. The curriculum concludes with a student teaching experience in the final semester. Applicants typically need a Bachelor's degree with a substantial French major, though those with comparable qualifications may also apply. Participants must successfully complete all Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) components during their first semester and achieve at least an Advanced Low rating on the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview. While Massachusetts participates in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement for license reciprocity across states, UMass Amherst's College of Education cannot ensure this program fulfills licensure requirements outside Massachusetts.
