The University of Washington stands among a select group of U.S. institutions providing a Master's program in Korean Studies. The curriculum encompasses Korean language instruction, along with studies in history, social sciences, political science, literature, and legal studies. The language department delivers comprehensive four-year training in modern Korean, including specialized advanced reading courses. Historical studies span Korea's entire timeline, from ancient archaeological evidence to present-day developments. Graduate-level seminars enable research using Korean and other non-Western language sources across diverse subjects in the nation's political, socioeconomic, and intellectual evolution. Contemporary society courses concentrate on 20th and 21st century developments in both North and South Korea, examining their political, economic, and social transformations. The curriculum is further enriched by visiting faculty from various academic disciplines.

This program aims to equip students with versatile knowledge applicable across multiple professional fields. In recent years, alumni have established thriving careers in commerce, finance, public service, social services, and academia. Some graduates have leveraged this degree as preparation for doctoral studies in history, political science, anthropology, or comparative literature at UW and other institutions. This educational pathway has fostered a vibrant community of Korea-focused scholars at the university, significantly enhancing the program's academic environment.
