The Regional Studies East Asia (RSEA) program offers dynamic interdisciplinary graduate training focused on East Asian languages, societies, and cultures. This flexible program supports both professionals seeking Asia-focused careers and students preparing for PhD programs in East Asian studies. RSEA graduates pursue diverse paths in academia, government, military service, media, international institutions, and business. Established in 1946 by prominent China scholar John King Fairbank as Regional Studies China, the program evolved to encompass Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, becoming the AM degree now known as RSEA. Over its 75+ year history, RSEA has shaped East Asian scholarship and graduated thousands of accomplished alumni who have excelled in both academic and public service spheres.
Admission to the RSEA AM program is highly competitive. Successful applicants will have demonstrated the potential for academic achievement at the graduate level. In evaluating applications, the RSEA admissions committee takes into consideration all elements of an applicant’s background. In particular, the statement of purpose should introduce the applicant's academic background and goals while describing a detailed plan of study in RSEA. Furthermore, each proposed plan of study is evaluated to assess the availability of suitable resources to provide adequate training and supervision to an applicant, if admitted.
