To earn a Master of Arts in Astronomy, students must complete at least 30 credit hours (which includes any three core graduate astronomy courses), present a thesis or research project that shows their research skills, and pass the qualifying exam. During their initial two years, graduate students enroll in classes and start research projects under faculty guidance. After successfully completing their second-year qualifying exam, they proceed to Ph.D. dissertation research. All graduate students at IU acquire teaching experience throughout their studies and have opportunities to lead summer session courses independently.
