The M.S. program is completely optional and can be pursued by students working toward their Ph.D. This research-focused degree requires students to present their findings orally. Students may choose to complete the M.S. with or without a thesis. Even without submitting a thesis, candidates must spend at least one semester collaborating with a research group to develop skills in physics or astronomy research. For theoretical research projects, students must additionally complete an advanced lab or electronics course to acquire hands-on experimental knowledge. All M.S. candidates must fulfill a teaching requirement equivalent to one semester. Earning an M.S. degree while progressing toward a Ph.D. is strongly recommended.
