The NMSU Astronomy Department provides graduate programs for both Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Their curriculum includes advanced studies in astrophysics, stellar atmospheres, observational methods, interstellar phenomena, galaxy formation, stellar life cycles, extragalactic astronomy, cosmological theories, and solar system research. To enhance their expertise, students supplement their studies with courses from related disciplines. The department aims to grant an M.S. in Astronomy to PhD candidates who successfully pass their comprehensive written and oral examinations. Alternatively, with faculty guidance, students may choose to complete a standalone Master's degree instead of pursuing doctoral studies.
