The Master of Science in Astronomy program mandates completion of at least 30 semester hours of graduate-level coursework. Candidates must fulfill this requirement by taking a minimum of 12 semester hours from core courses, at least 3 semester hours from 5000-level or higher classes, with the remaining credits from 4000-level or above offerings. A minimum of 24 semester hours must be completed at the University of Iowa after being admitted to the Physics and Astronomy Department. Seminar participation does not contribute toward the 30-semester-hour degree requirement. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 2.75 throughout their studies.
Students may allocate up to one-third of their coursework to complementary scientific disciplines such as meteorology, geology, or electrical engineering, with such interdisciplinary study being actively encouraged. The physics and astronomy graduate curriculum is tailored to individual needs, with each incoming student receiving guidance from a faculty advisor who helps design their academic path and monitors their advancement.
Upon completion, graduates will:
grasp fundamental concepts applicable across various disciplines while developing technical vocabulary, problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in technical communication,
master advanced mathematical concepts relevant to physics applications,
gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge experimental instruments and technologies,
cultivate innovative thinking and adaptability to accommodate emerging scientific breakthroughs,
develop expertise in experimental and observational methodologies, including data interpretation and the correlation between empirical findings and theoretical frameworks, and
acquire advanced data analysis capabilities and computational proficiency, along with mastery of contemporary data processing techniques.
A U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or an equivalent degree from another country as determined by the Office of Admissions with a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.00.
