The IDS Community Development program is an interdisciplinary major that incorporates courses and faculty from twelve departments across six schools and colleges. Offered as a field of study within the College of Arts and Sciences, this degree program integrates multiple disciplines while following the college's general education curriculum. The curriculum combines theoretical foundations with practical application, promotes collaborative learning, employs the scholar-practitioner approach, and establishes partnerships with government agencies, businesses, corporations, nonprofits, and community groups to deliver experiential learning opportunities. By strategically connecting existing university courses and creating new ones, we've designed a comprehensive, unified, and autonomous community development degree program. With an urban focus, Howard University's community development program addresses urban communities at neighborhood, municipal, state, and international scales, concentrating on urban policy, nonprofit administration and finance, community economic growth, urban planning, public health, social services, and education. The Washington, DC metropolitan area serves as the program's primary learning environment.
