This program equips graduates with the ability to utilize fundamental scientific principles and methodologies to enhance organizational effectiveness while boosting satisfaction among both customers and employees. Grounded in the belief that collaborative efforts between researchers and practitioners yield mutual benefits, the curriculum draws from multiple graduate programs at Hofstra University, including the MA in industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology, doctoral psychology programs, and the MS/MBA offerings at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business. What sets this program apart is its interdisciplinary focus and strong emphasis on organizational research methods, blending scientific rigor with practical applications across psychology and organizational studies. Designed for students holding a master's degree in social sciences or business, the program develops expertise in two key domains: (1) employing research methods and statistics to address real-world organizational challenges, and (2) mastering organizational disciplines like I/O psychology, HR management, and organizational behavior.
Following a scientist-practitioner framework, the curriculum immerses students in research methodologies, theoretical foundations, and practical applications for solving organizational problems. A significant portion of training—including internships, research courses, and dissertation work—involves hands-on organizational projects that simultaneously advance student learning and contribute to I/O psychology knowledge. The internship component offers 20-hour weekly practical experience under joint organizational and faculty supervision, while research courses provide opportunities for applied studies in both lab and field environments. Dissertation research may occur in either setting, with projects expected to demonstrate both scientific rigor and practical relevance—a hallmark of the program's science-practice integration. Additional details are available on the graduate studies webpage.
Partnering with numerous New York-area entities—from corporations and public agencies to healthcare systems and nonprofits—this unique Long Island-based doctoral program welcomes students from varied backgrounds and professional experiences, standing as the region's sole applied organizational psychology PhD offering.
