Harvard Law School's first-year program equips students with a robust intellectual framework for their legal studies, introducing essential principles, theoretical concepts, and practical skills while fostering strong legal reasoning and analytical abilities. First-year scholars engage with foundational subjects including civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law, legislation and regulation, property, and torts—courses that together offer comprehensive insight into the common law tradition, the framework of the U.S. legal system, and the interplay of statutes and regulations. To connect classroom learning with real-world legal practice, all first-year students take part in the January Experiential Term, selecting from various hands-on courses focused on collaboration, practical application, and personal growth. Additionally, students complete a legal research and writing course featuring the First-Year Ames Moot Court Program and other exercises to hone different legal writing styles. In spring term, students can select an elective from numerous advanced courses tailored to their interests. The first-year cohort is organized into seven sections of eighty students, each guided by faculty section leaders—typically senior professors teaching core courses—who mentor students and organize law-related extracurricular programs. Beyond section activities, fall term includes first-year reading groups of 10-12 students, facilitated by faculty advisors. These non-graded discussions enable students to examine specialized topics beyond the core curriculum, ranging from counterterrorism law and climate policy to Biblical jurisprudence, mystery novels, conservative legal theory, AI applications, and bioethical dilemmas.
