The JSD program typically requires at least three years to complete, involving up to four semesters of coursework. Each JSD student is paired with a primary faculty advisor specializing in their research field. After the first year, students must pass a qualifying exam showing broad competence in their discipline. This exam is evaluated by a committee of three faculty members plus the primary advisor. The exam scope covers a wider range than just the dissertation topic. Students then focus on refining their dissertation research while working closely with their dissertation committee. A second oral preliminary exam evaluates the research proposal. The doctoral committee monitors thesis progress, provides guidance, and conducts a final oral defense of the completed dissertation. The approved dissertation is ultimately submitted to the University of Illinois Graduate College.
