This program offers graduate students the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary research on Black communities across the United States, Africa, and the African diaspora through close collaboration with our faculty.
Our professors specialize in examining race and Black identity through both domestic and international lenses, drawing from fields like African-American Studies, Anthropology, Art History, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Social Work, and Public Health. Few academic departments can rival our expertise in:
Academic activism
Diaspora-focused research on Black popular and mass culture
Pedagogy rooted in cultural relevance
Community development initiatives
Studies of gender, sexuality, and social dynamics
While our primary focus remains on Social Justice and Community Responsibility within the U.S. context, we actively promote scholarship and advocacy for Black liberation worldwide.
