The University of Memphis's History Department provides MA and PhD programs specializing in Egyptology. Unlike other North American institutions that focus primarily on Egyptian language, art history, and archaeology, our program stands out by emphasizing Ancient Egyptian history and historiography at both graduate levels. Students also receive comprehensive instruction in Egyptological philology, art history, and archaeology through collaborations with our History and Art History Departments. As a public institution, we deliver this specialized education at an affordable cost, making us the sole Egyptology program in the southern U.S. Our department examines ancient Egypt's language, culture, and history through an interdisciplinary lens rooted in historical methods. Beyond foundational Egyptian history, students develop expertise in Egyptological research methodologies and scholarly writing. With training in philology, archaeology, and art history, they explore diverse topics in Egyptian history under the guidance of Drs. Peter Brand and Suzanne Onstine. Additionally, students can engage in fieldwork and travel opportunities in Egypt.
