The CGES and German Department collaborate on a combined program resulting in a MAGES/Ph.D. in German. Students in this dual degree track complete their coursework approximately one year faster by working on both degrees concurrently, while maintaining comprehensive training in both their specialized field and area studies. The MAGES program is an intensive two-year, full-time interdisciplinary curriculum that establishes strong foundations in five core disciplines: comparative politics, cultural studies, economics, history, and international relations. Students also enjoy the flexibility to focus on their preferred specialization area.
This joint program requires three academic years (66 credits) of coursework from both the MAGES curriculum and German Department offerings. It's ideal for those pursuing doctoral studies in German who want to enhance their research with comprehensive knowledge of modern Germany and Europe's economic systems, cultural landscapes, historical developments, political structures, and international affairs. For their Ph.D., candidates specialize in either Literary and Cultural Studies or Linguistic and Cultural Studies.
