The Arabic and Islamic Studies PhD Program provides specialized education in Arabic Linguistics, Classical and Modern Arabic Literature, and Islamic Studies (covering Intellectual History, Theology, and Law), focusing on rigorous analysis of primary sources across historical periods. The program equips students with contemporary theoretical frameworks and critical methodologies to examine source materials while engaging critically with existing scholarship. We aim to cultivate future researchers by developing their linguistic and analytical capabilities for innovative academic work. Graduates frequently pursue academic paths, initially through post-doctoral positions, before securing tenure-track roles or research positions at universities and institutions.
Prospective students must demonstrate Arabic proficiency equivalent to completing three years of intensive undergraduate study at Georgetown University. Non-native speakers must take a departmental Arabic assessment during their first week. Those who don't pass must enroll in advanced Arabic courses and retake the exam by fall semester's end. Continued failure requires another attempt by spring semester's conclusion. All students must achieve passing scores by August of their first year to remain in the program. Remedial Arabic courses don't count toward degree requirements. Students seeking ACTFL certification should coordinate with the department.
