The Department provides a PhD program in Italian Studies designed to help students attain advanced scholarly proficiency and cultivate the ability to produce original research in the discipline. Our program emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to Italian literature, cinema, and cultural studies, with faculty expertise spanning medieval/Renaissance studies, linguistics, modern/contemporary literature, and film analysis. The Italian Studies PhD program integrates linguistic, literary, cinematic, and cultural methodologies to facilitate interdisciplinary exploration. Students follow a structured yet adaptable curriculum with core courses that establish foundations for specialized research. Beyond their primary focus in literature, culture, or film, students select a minor field and complete either an existing Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization or Graduate Minor (with potential to design custom options if needed). The program includes training in language pedagogy, Italian linguistic history/structure, theoretical frameworks across disciplines, and requires mastery of two professional languages besides Italian and English.
