The graduate program provides comprehensive education in Italian Studies, culminating in a PhD. Students first establish a solid base in critical analysis and historical perspectives of Italian literature, then branch out into diverse interdisciplinary fields. These encompass film studies, comparative literature, literary/rhetorical/cultural theory, gender studies, history, anthropology, art/music history, architecture, classics, political science, medieval/early modern studies, and Romance languages/literature, among others.
Our Italian Studies Department features a combined MA/PhD track, with the MA serving as the initial step toward the doctorate. We do not accept applications solely for the MA program. Candidates with a relevant master's degree from other institutions may enter directly at the PhD level.
Typically, students complete their Italian Studies PhD within four years.
The minimum graduate admission requirements are:
a bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution;
a satisfactory scholastic average, usually a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale; and
enough undergraduate training to do graduate work in your chosen field.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
