The Chinese studies program offers comprehensive instruction in both spoken and written Mandarin while fostering analytical perspectives on diverse aspects of Chinese culture. This encompasses classical and contemporary literature, visual arts, cinema, popular culture, as well as fundamental philosophical and social concepts. The majority of classes are taught in Chinese with Chinese-language reading materials.
This program, unavailable to fluent native speakers because of limited advanced course offerings, starts with language training and a writing-focused introduction to key East Asian cultural topics. Students progress through upper-level language and cultural studies (including study abroad opportunities) before completing their studies with a Senior Seminar project or Honors Thesis on a chosen subject within Chinese cultural studies.
Alongside department offerings, students can access numerous Asian studies courses across other disciplines. Chinese majors are strongly encouraged to complete part of their history core requirements through Chinese history coursework. Relevant China-focused classes are also available in Economics, Government, International Affairs, Theology and Religious Studies, among other fields. These may serve as electives or potentially fulfill core requirements, and can contribute toward an Asian Studies certificate for interested students. Department advisors can assist in creating a cohesive academic plan that aligns with student interests while utilizing these varied resources. Note that English-taught courses taken overseas cannot be applied toward major or minor requirements.
