Healthcare providers and students in medical fields recognize that as the Spanish-speaking community in the U.S. continues expanding rapidly, with many Hispanic individuals having minimal English skills, it's essential to have physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals capable of direct patient communication. This 15-credit certification program provides comprehensive training in both spoken and written medical Spanish, along with cultural awareness training to effectively serve Spanish-speaking patients. The curriculum focuses on mastering medical terminology in Spanish and practicing realistic healthcare scenarios through interactive Spanish conversations.
The Advanced Spanish for Health Professionals and First Responders Certificate is available to all University of Akron students pursuing healthcare careers (including majors in Health Professions, BS/MD programs, Premed, biology, psychology, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, pre-physical therapy, emergency responders, etc.). Current UA students must complete Spanish 202 (or equivalent) with at least a 3.0 GPA to qualify. Other applicants must demonstrate sufficient proficiency through an oral interview with Spanish faculty. This certificate can be completed alongside Spanish minor or major programs.
