The Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics provides a vibrant MA program focusing on Russian language studies, historical linguistics, and Slavic literature and culture.

Alumni from our program have pursued careers with the US State Department, Department of Defense, and Defense Language Institute, while others have joined doctoral programs at institutions like Florida State University, Harvard, Rutgers, and the University of Toronto. Our curriculum emphasizes linguistic and cultural competence, equipping students for roles in government, diplomacy, or NGOs. Regular career workshops with federal representatives highlight diverse professional pathways.

Students gain thorough research and teaching preparation. Our pedagogical approach combines classroom experience with theoretical foundations for Russian language education. Following an intensive summer training, graduate instructors participate in seminars on Language Pedagogy and Second Language Acquisition. Each semester features a teaching practicum concentrating on Russian language instruction and professional development.

Cross-disciplinary opportunities allow students to study with faculty across language programs, exploring comparative literature, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition. Graduate instructors lead undergraduate courses ranging from beginner Russian to specialized classes on Russian Grammar and Popular Culture. The summer training precedes enrollment in advanced pedagogy seminars, complemented by ongoing teaching practicums each term.
We offer two MA options: a thesis track requiring 30 credit hours (including thesis work and core theory courses) with 18 graded credits, and a non-thesis track requiring 32 credit hours with 21 graded credits.
