Brown University maintains a rich history of developing, promoting, and supporting interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary initiatives. The Graduate School welcomes students proposing academic projects that transcend traditional department boundaries and cannot be fulfilled through existing Master's degree programs. Applicants may seek approval to undertake integrative graduate studies as Master's candidates. The admission procedure varies depending on whether the applicant is currently matriculated in another Brown degree program, as outlined in the Graduate School Handbook. Prospective students must submit a customized academic plan culminating in either a Master of Arts or Master of Science degree. Following Handbook protocols, documentation of faculty endorsement is mandatory. The Graduate Council evaluates all submitted materials before granting final approval.
Applications from students in applied fields such as biology, biochemistry, economics and computer science are strongly encouraged, with the understanding that necessary mathematical coursework needs to be completed before enrollment in the program.
Regarding TOEFL, the recommended minimum score for admission consideration is 577 on the paper-based test and 90 on the Internet-based test. For IELTS, the recommended minimum overall band score is 7.
