The History Department provides diverse graduate programs at both the Master's (MA) and Doctoral (PhD) levels, preparing students for various professional paths. It features robust graduate studies in specialized fields including American, European, African-American, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Latin American history. Beyond the conventional MA program—which demands expertise in primary and secondary fields along with a thesis—the department offers an MA in public history. This track trains students for roles like archivists and museum professionals while establishing a foundation for history-focused positions in government and private organizations. Additional options include an MA teaching track and a terminal MS degree. Exceptional students may qualify for the accelerated MA-PhD program, which offers comprehensive art history education with specialization in one of the department's key fields. The 36-credit Master of Arts program cultivates research and writing abilities essential for careers in art historical fields.
