The College of Law's three-year Juris Doctor program starts with fundamental courses before advancing to contemporary theoretical and interdisciplinary studies. First-year students build a solid base in legal history, doctrine, procedure, and analytical skills essential for advanced coursework. During the second and third years, students enjoy nearly complete elective freedom, choosing from diverse course offerings. These include theoretical classes, industry-specific studies in fields like healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and sports law, plus practical learning experiences preparing graduates for careers in business, government, and legal practice. Beyond our renowned business, environmental, and international law programs, we boast exceptional criminal law studies. Students may pursue ten joint-degree options through collaborations with other Florida State University departments. Practical training opportunities include family law clinics, children's advocacy programs, and statewide externships. Co-curricular activities like Mock Trial, Moot Court, and student-run law journals further develop advocacy and scholarly skills.
Complementing the J.D. degree with a specialized certificate demonstrates focused expertise to potential employers. Our law school provides certificate programs in three distinct fields. Located in Tallahassee, Florida State University College of Law serves as an ideal environment for environmental, energy, and land use law studies. The certificate curriculum allows students to pursue specialized training while maintaining a comprehensive legal education. Graduates who complete the program receive both their J.D. degree and a certificate, signaling their advanced competency in environmental, energy, and land use law to employers and professional networks.
