Recognized as one of the nation's premier writing programs, Florida State University's Creative Writing Program boasts global acclaim for its outstanding quality. Our distinguished faculty includes recipients of prestigious honors like the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, and National Poetry Series. These accomplished writers are not only devoted to their own literary pursuits but are also celebrated for their exceptional mentorship and dedicated teaching approach.
Our students represent some of today's most promising literary talents, often launching successful academic careers and publishing with renowned national presses. Nestled in charming Tallahassee, our capital city with Southern hospitality, the program fosters a vibrant community where writers refine their skills while forming enduring professional connections.
The English Graduate Program provides three degree options: Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). M.A. candidates choose between two specializations: (1) Literature, Media, and Culture or (2) Rhetoric and Composition. M.F.A. students focus exclusively on Creative Writing. Literature, Media, and Culture M.A. students must complete the Professional Writing Capstone (ENG 5971) - see Graduate Handbook for details. Rhetoric and Composition students may opt for a thesis or portfolio exam, while Creative Writing students submit original creative works. Ph.D. candidates complete core requirements in literature, language studies, and literary theory before undertaking comprehensive exams and dissertation research in specialized areas including Medieval/Early Modern British Studies, British/Irish Literature (1660-1900), Modern Literature (post-1900), American Literature (pre-1900), African-American Studies, Text Technologies History, Gender/Sexuality Studies, Postcolonial/Transnational Studies, and Publishing/Editing.
