The English Department provides three graduate degree options: Master of Arts (M.A.), Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The M.A. program features specializations in literary studies along with rhetoric and composition, while the M.F.A. focuses on poetry or fiction writing. The Ph.D. program offers concentrations in literary studies, creative writing, and rhetoric/composition. M.A. graduates pursue advanced academic work or professional roles in writing, editing, technical communication, research, or business sectors, typically completing the program in 2-3 years. Both M.F.A. and Ph.D. programs equip students for careers in writing, college-level teaching, and academic research. The M.F.A. involves 3-4 years of study culminating in a creative thesis, while the Ph.D. requires 4-6 years including coursework, exams, and a dissertation. Beyond core studies in British, American, and global literatures, the department offers specialized training in literary theory, folklore, rhetoric, composition, technical/professional writing, and creative writing. Students can also gain practical experience through ongoing publishing and editorial initiatives.
