As one of just a handful nationwide, our program provides graduate-level creative writing workshops led by professional authors across various genres. Students cultivate versatility in multiple writing styles while simultaneously gaining teaching expertise for creative writing classrooms. These advanced workshops provide in-depth critiques focusing on artistic craftsmanship and technical proficiency. Participants explore contemporary artistic trends, engaging with ongoing discussions about aesthetic frameworks, historical influences, narrative structures, poetic forms, and theoretical perspectives. The curriculum includes literature seminars spanning British, American, and global traditions to deepen understanding of literary heritage. Students design personalized study plans aligned with their scholarly focus as they ready themselves for comprehensive exams - credentials that qualify them to teach college literature courses. Those awarded Graduate Teaching Assistantships develop instructional abilities by leading diverse classes, including introductory creative writing. Beyond academic guidance, the program fosters career growth through publishing courses, application preparation seminars, and hands-on editorial experience with The Vermillion Literary Project, South Dakota Review, and Astrophil Press.
