The FSU College of Music boasts one of the nation's most extensive and renowned theory and composition departments.
We provide exceptional guidance and mentorship for students pursuing music theory and composition at all academic levels - doctoral, master's, and undergraduate. Our program ranks among the country's top for doctoral graduate career placement. Alumni from our master's and undergraduate programs consistently achieve success in advanced studies and professional pursuits. Students explore innovative concepts, acquire real-world experience, and thrive in our nurturing, cooperative environment with faculty and peers. Graduate teaching assistants receive ongoing faculty supervision, developing teaching skills through instructional practice and expert mentorship, including classroom observations and curriculum resources. Many master's and doctoral students continue performing with groups like the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and numerous campus ensembles. Our department supports two specialized groups: Polymorphia (a versatile contemporary music ensemble) and EChO (the Electric Chamber Orchestra).
A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution, or a comparable degree from an international institution, with a minimum 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average (GPA) in all coursework attempted while enrolled as an upper-division undergraduate student working towards a bachelor's degree.
