Presented in more than 450 locations across the globe, our composition instructors create music spanning diverse styles and approaches, while maintaining a commitment to avoiding rigid stylistic impositions on students. Even during periods when conventional academic music norms held greater sway, faculty composers consistently rejected dogmatic approaches, welcoming applicants representing a wide stylistic variety. They collectively value thorough training in both classical theory and cutting-edge musical technologies, while fostering strong partnerships with performers. The department takes pride in the tight-knit connections between student composers and our substantial graduate performance community. A longstanding tradition of championing contemporary music thrives here, promoting meaningful collaboration among performers, composers, and music scholars. During their initial year, PhD students work with an assigned faculty advisory committee to design a personalized curriculum through a doctoral agreement. This contract outlines required coursework and anticipated creative or research outputs. Before achieving candidacy (typically after two to three years), history and theory students complete an oral examination in their specialization area and submit a thesis proposal. Composition students fulfill this requirement through an extended musical work.
