Our PhD program aims to equip students for research and teaching roles at leading academic institutions. To accomplish this, we've created a curriculum spanning diverse subject areas while maintaining a strong focus on both theoretical development and data-driven research. The program fosters hands-on learning through personalized faculty guidance. Consequently, our graduates have secured tenure-track positions at prestigious research universities like the University of Chicago and University of Michigan, as well as elite liberal arts colleges including Middlebury and Wellesley. Our placement success earned our department a spot among the nation's top 20 political science graduate programs in a recent PS: Political Science and Politics ranking.

The program's structure helps students cultivate essential research skills through multiple avenues. We provide comprehensive course offerings across three core disciplines: American government and politics, Comparative politics, and International relations, enabling students to explore and refine their academic interests. Our methodology training equips students with advanced analytical techniques to investigate complex research questions. Beyond classroom learning, students showcase their work through a second-year spring poster presentation and deliver a formal research paper during their third-year fall semester as part of our departmental speaker series.
