The Italian Studies major offers an interdisciplinary exploration of Italy through diverse lenses including literature, culture, history, art, philosophy, and politics. This program introduces students to Italy's significant contributions to global intellectual and cultural heritage while examining its contemporary global presence. The curriculum consists of ten courses, with six mandatory Italian language and literature classes (201, 202, 301, 302, plus two fourth-year courses typically numbered 300 and 470). Students are strongly advised to take one foundational survey course (either 170 or 171, with possible variations) or the immersive 270R course offered during the Italy Summer Program. Electives (three or more) can be selected from departments such as Italian, Art History, Classical Studies, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, and Religion, with additional options available in the Course Atlas pending Program Director approval. Participation in summer or semester study abroad programs in Italy is particularly encouraged for majors.
