Pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing offers benefits that are challenging or time-intensive to attain otherwise. A key advantage of the M.F.A. is dedicated time – time to hone your skills and time saved by gaining structured knowledge about writing, career opportunities, and the literary landscape.
Our faculty consists of acclaimed, distinguished authors who are frequently invited for readings, included in anthologies, and recognized with awards. Our partnership with Southern Illinois University Press and our established history of organizing literary festivals and readings integrate our local community into the broader writing world, creating enhanced possibilities for our graduate students.
First, the workshops. Like most writing programs, you'll share your work and provide constructive feedback on peers' writing in a collaborative setting guided by faculty.
You'll also receive personalized mentorship from our writing faculty. Additionally, you'll develop a thesis of original creative work under close supervision from your advisor.
You'll explore diverse forms – whether poetry or fiction as your primary concentration. We expose students to various styles and approaches, ranging from conventional to avant-garde, including emerging technologies and alternative platforms for publishing and narrative expression.
With our intimate program size, we maintain outstanding faculty-student ratios and foster both structured and organic mentoring relationships. While no degree can guarantee literary success, our M.F.A. program is designed to give dedicated, skilled writers the direction, education, encouragement, and network to help them achieve their creative potential.
