The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts is a two-year graduate program specializing in fiction, poetry, nonfiction, screenwriting, and playwriting. This interdisciplinary program brings together faculty from both the Creative Writing Department and the Theatre, Film, and Digital Production Department.
Students participate in intensive genre-specific workshops, concluding with a capstone project (either a master's thesis or manuscript) that demonstrates their refined skills through a completed work such as a poetry anthology, novel, short story compilation, memoir, essay collection, screenplay, or theatrical production.
While the MFA program requires students to focus on their primary genre of application, it actively promotes cross-genre exploration, fostering creative connections between disciplines. For instance, narrative techniques from screenwriting and playwriting can strengthen fiction and nonfiction works, while poetic devices like lyricism and metaphor can enrich descriptive language and dialogue across all writing forms.
The curriculum also includes elective seminars from related departments. Many students complement their studies with courses in comparative literature, foreign languages, English literature, Hispanic studies, media studies, and other relevant fields.
