The Department of Teacher Education develops Urban Professional Multicultural Educators through a comprehensive curriculum combining coursework and hands-on field training. Our programs are tailored to equip aspiring educators with the necessary skills. The curriculum emphasizes teaching excellence in modern diverse classrooms by exploring key educational topics, examining student learning processes and effective instructional methods, and incorporating technology in education. We encourage continuous self-assessment of teaching practices among our candidates. Our network of Partnership Schools and educational collaborations provides real-world experience. Graduates evaluate their professional growth using portfolios aligned with our core principles, which emphasize social equity, transformative teaching approaches, and educational reform grounded in Vincentian values that respect individual worth.
Beyond meeting Illinois licensure standards, our program cultivates global perspectives by requiring candidates to earn an International Baccalaureate Teaching and Learning Certificate. This IB certification for both Middle Years and Diploma Programs equips graduates to teach at IB institutions worldwide. The IB credential broadens career prospects while deepening candidates' understanding of inquiry-based learning and professional reflection.
