The American Studies program's Popular Culture and Media Studies track enables students to examine the significant and multifaceted influence of popular culture throughout American history. Unlike elite or traditional cultural expressions, popular culture typically encompasses mass-produced entertainment and commercial leisure activities that reach wide audiences. These include media like movies, TV shows, recorded music, and digital content, as well as widely available experiences such as sporting events, theme parks, theatrical productions, and online platforms. From the late 1800s onward, America's cultural identity has been profoundly shaped by its popular arts, particularly through the global reach of Hollywood cinema and television. This academic concentration encourages interdisciplinary study, allowing students to blend comprehensive cultural overviews with focused analyses of specific media forms while exploring diverse analytical frameworks for understanding America's popular culture landscape.
