The Department for Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), a pioneering program in Africana studies nationwide, functions as the institutional hub for African American studies at the University of Michigan. Connecting humanities with social sciences and examining both Africa and its global diasporas, DAAS provides educational programs at both graduate and undergraduate levels, including a specialized graduate certificate. The Department of American Culture (AC) collaborates closely with DAAS through shared faculty appointments, with many AC scholars in African American studies maintaining additional academic ties. Working in concert with American studies, cultural studies, and comparative ethnic studies, AC's African American studies faculty group investigates wide-ranging topics: cultural exchanges across the Atlantic, jazz and African American music traditions, black literary works, gender and sexuality dynamics, historical relationships between black and Native American communities, interactions between Asian and African Americans, urban racial politics, and various forms of black cultural expression including humor. This program boasts distinguished educators, cutting-edge curriculum at all levels, and groundbreaking research that consistently expands academic horizons.
