Native American Studies (NAS) offers an in-depth exploration of the past and present realities of Indigenous peoples. The program examines both the unique relationship between tribal nations and the U.S. government, as well as broader transnational concerns affecting Native communities throughout Canada, North America, Central America, and South America. When referring to Native Americans, NAS faculty acknowledge the diversity within these populations, including Alaska Natives (comprising Aleut, Inuit, and other Indigenous Alaskans) and Native Hawaiian groups. The NAS major and minor aim to familiarize students with scholarly perspectives on Indigenous histories, cultures, and contemporary issues. Majors can pursue advanced studies in complementary areas like literature, sociology, education, and legal studies. Alongside specialized Native American coursework, students complete a concentration in a conventional academic discipline such as anthropology, history, or psychology to achieve comprehensive academic preparation.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
