This focus area examines cultural works—such as art, cinema, television, and literature—alongside key theoretical and ideological movements in American cultural studies. Adopting a hemispheric or Inter-American perspective, it considers how social, economic, and political interactions influence cultural exchange across the Americas. Coursework addresses themes like transnational migration, race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, class, and indigenous identities in cultural representations. The Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) Department investigates the significant impact of Latin Americans and Latinx populations worldwide. Its programs highlight the deep connections between Latin America and the United States, especially through the formation of Latinx communities in the U.S. Additionally, it explores the intricate relationships with Indigenous, African, European, Semitic, Arab, and Asian communities across the Americas.
