American Studies explores the vast spectrum of the American experience. This interdisciplinary discipline combines history, literature, popular culture, media, geography, politics, art, and religion to critically assess American society, culture, institutions, and intellectual heritage. Scholars in American Studies investigate the essence of American culture and how its expressions mirror societal values, beliefs, biases, joys, and perspectives. The curriculum draws from diverse cultural studies approaches, including media analysis, material culture, visual interpretation, critical race theory, and gender/sexuality studies. Learners develop expertise in American cultural studies by mastering theoretical frameworks and analyzing primary sources. Those studying history, communication, anthropology, political science, sociology, English, or interdisciplinary programs often complement their degrees with an American Studies major or minor. The program equips students for advanced humanities studies or professional careers in law, business, and other sectors, with many alumni continuing to graduate-level education.
