The Near Eastern studies graduate program focuses on the languages, literature, history, and cultures of the Near East. This program enables students to gain foundational knowledge of these civilizations while developing specialized expertise in specific areas such as: ancient Near Eastern studies (including archaeology), Arabic literature, biblical studies, early Christianity, Hebrew literature, Islamic studies, Judaic studies, and contemporary Middle Eastern studies. Ph.D. candidates must achieve proficiency in the primary language(s) relevant to their dissertation research. Early identification of specialization areas and consultation with advisors regarding language requirements is strongly recommended. By the conclusion of their sixth graduate term, Ph.D. candidates must show reading proficiency in two scholarly languages (selected from French, German, modern Greek, modern Hebrew, Italian, Russian, or Spanish) in consultation with their committee chair. Master's degree candidates must demonstrate reading ability in one of these languages at least one term prior to degree completion.
All applicants to the field are expected to have had at least two years of undergraduate study in one Near Eastern language or the equivalent.
