The Center for Middle Eastern Studies serves as a hub for cross-disciplinary research on the Middle East and North Africa at Harvard University, fostering an active community that welcomes your involvement.
Through its PhD program, the Center provides specialized study options across three combined fields: history, anthropology, and art/architectural history. You'll collaborate with distinguished faculty from partner departments while being urged to connect with scholars beyond your primary field and develop proficiency in at least one regional research language.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the PhD program must have completed a four-year Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. A professional degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning is recommended but not necessary. All applicants must indicate a proposed major area of study at the time of their initial application. These proposed areas of study should be congruent with the interests and expertise of at least one Graduate School of Design faculty member associated with the PhD program. Official transcript(s). Three letters of recommendation. A statement of purpose that gives the admissions committee a clear sense of the student’s intellectual interests and strengths. A writing sample or samples (totalling no more than 20 pages). This can be a paper written for a course, journal article, and/or thesis excerpt. The writing sample should preferably focus on a subject related to architecture, landscape architecture, or urban planning. Applicants who are non-native English speakers and who received their undergraduate degree from an academic institution where English is not the primary language of instruction must prove their English proficiency by earning either a minimum score of 80 on the Internet based test (iBT) of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a minimum score of 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test.
