American Studies offers an interdisciplinary exploration of key themes, trends, and patterns shaping America's history and contemporary society. You'll employ diverse perspectives and methods, honing your ability to integrate knowledge while building critical analysis skills for sophisticated examinations. The program allows students to customize their focus area—options include visual culture, ethnic studies, constitutional law, environmental issues, economic systems, or social hierarchies. While students enjoy considerable flexibility in course selection, they must work with advisors to establish a concentration and complete six related courses. These focus areas should span at least two academic disciplines, enabling students to tailor their studies to personal interests while maintaining academic rigor. The department strongly supports individualized concentration development.
Students completing their high school during the 2021-22 academic year or if they've graduated from high school but have earned fewer than 12 credits at a college or university are eligible for admission as first year students.
