The American Studies program explores U.S. culture through its diverse local, regional, national, and global manifestations. Our interdisciplinary approach blends traditional academic methods with innovative techniques, enabling us to examine unique questions using unconventional materials. To enroll as an American Studies major, students need at least one college-level course (from UVA or transfer credits) in American history or culture—which may include literature, music, religion, art, or anthropology—completed with a C grade or higher. Note: AP and IB courses don't meet this requirement. We recommend declaring this major during your sophomore or junior year.
